HIV does not kill, stigma does. Today, members of the key population had a consultative meeting where they came up with anti-stigma messages for the key population living with HIV/AIDS within the region. HIV stigma is negative attitutdes and beliefs about people living with HIV. This labels individuals as being part of a group that is socially unacceptable. HIV stigma and discrimination affect the emotional well-being and mental health of people with HIV. People with HIV often internalize the stigma they experience and begin to develop a negative self-image. They may fear they will be discriminated against or judged negatively if their HIV status is revealed. However this should not be the case.
